The US Department of Energy (DOE) is investing $30 million in its AI4IX program to use artificial intelligence to expedite connecting new energy projects to the power grid. This initiative aims to foster partnerships between grid operators and developers to address the current backlog caused by slow interconnection processes, which hinder solar and wind farm implementation. Currently, new projects can take up to seven years to connect due to necessary grid upgrade studies. The outdated system, designed for fewer, large-scale fossil fuel plants, struggles with the rise of decentralized renewable projects, resulting in a backlog of 2, 600 gigawatts awaiting connection. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are now more cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to coal or gas. Over 94% of new energy capacity waiting to connect is carbon-free.
The DOE suggests AI could streamline the labor-intensive application process by quickly identifying deficiencies and notifying developers for corrections. The DOE is accepting AI4IX funding proposals through January 10, 2025, with awards announced in winter 2025. Challenges include potential federal agency upheavals with the incoming Trump administration, which plans "mass head-count reductions, " potentially affecting programs like AI4IX. However, Trump's plans haven't specifically targeted Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funds supporting the initiative. Trump’s proposed EPA head, Lee Zeldin, is focused on making the US an AI leader, possibly influencing DOE priorities to meet rising electricity demands from AI data centers, which could surge by 160% by 2030 according to Goldman Sachs Research.
