Israel has completed the development of the Oron intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft, which is considered one of the most advanced in the world. The recent attacks by Hamas have necessitated its deployment earlier than anticipated. The Israeli Defense Ministry announced significant progress in the preparation of the Oron aircraft in late August. The Oron, based on Gulfstream's G550 business jet airframe, was delivered to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) at the beginning of 2021. The IDF describes the Oron as a joint multi-domain, multi-sensor solution that incorporates revolutionary sensors and command-control systems, providing unprecedented intelligence capabilities across varying weather and visibility conditions. At a ceremony to celebrate the completion of systems and sensor integration, the Defense Ministry's Directorate of Defense Research and Development declared the readiness of Oron's intelligence systems for use, with test flights already underway. Shortly after, Oron has been put into operational use. The aircraft is stationed at Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel, home to the Israel Air Force's (IAF) 122nd Squadron, also known as "Nachshon. " Equipped with artificial intelligence, the Oron autonomously processes radar and signals intelligence data, allowing it to produce and identify thousands of targets within seconds. Elta, an Israeli firm, developed the Oron's Multi-Mission Airborne Reconnaissance and Surveillance System (MARS2), which streams real-time data to intelligence units.
The IAF's 7th Wing, formed in 2020, is likely to receive this valuable data. The 7th Wing, consisting of special ground units, including a commando unit, an intelligence unit, and a Special Air Force (SAF) combat troop school, would collaborate with the Oron in operations such as targeting Hamas command and control elements and conducting search and rescue missions for hostages. Capable of operating in distant countries, the Oron is likely being used to monitor communications with Hamas leadership in Qatar and Iran. It works alongside the IAF's Shavit (signals intelligence) and Eitam (airborne early warning and control) aircraft, also based on the G550 platform. The combined fleet of six aircraft has likely been continuously active, refueling and refreshing the aircrews as needed. The Oron's aircrew composition is unknown, but it is estimated to include at least six mission systems operators and two pilots. In the current situation, an enlarged flight crew would ensure sustained on-station operation. Israeli forces will make use of the Oron's ability to guide weapons to specific targets, coordinating with platforms like the F-35I, AH-64 and OH-58 helicopters, aerial drones, and possibly the newly developed medium robotic combat vehicle (MRCV) in urban areas such as Gaza. With its capacity to enhance situational awareness for special and conventional forces, the Oron is undoubtedly fully occupied as Israel responds to the recent attacks.
