At the start of the year, IBM, the IT giant, introduced its new partner program called IBM Partner Plus. The program aims to provide partners with enhanced access to sales, training, marketing resources, and incentives. IBM customized this support to help partners deepen their technical expertise and accelerate time to market. The program plays a crucial role in IBM's hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence strategy, which includes tools like Watson. Watson, launched in 2010, is an AI assistant that utilizes artificial intelligence to respond to natural language queries. Steve Smith, the general manager of IBM's global systems integrators, expressed that partners have been receptive to generative AI, an emerging technology. IBM offers enablement on how to utilize AI effectively and build optimal solutions using this tool. Smith further mentioned the company's goal of increasing partner sales from 40% to 80%. This goal may become achievable with IBM's recent launch of the 'Watsonx' Granite Model Series in September. This new iteration of Watson consists of generative AI models designed to infuse more AI into business applications and workflows. IBM aims for partners to sell and advocate for these models extensively. IBM also unveiled an enhanced partner portal in January, underscoring its commitment to prioritize partners.

The program's objective is to assist partners in expanding their market opportunities and creating unique revenue streams, including the ability to resell IBM products through various cloud marketplaces. The Partner Plus program has been running for nearly a year and now boasts over 15, 000 enrolled partners. To gain insight into how AI fits into partners' overall strategies and their adoption of bleeding-edge technology, IBM partners were asked for their perspective. Keri Dawson, Head of Solutions and Offerings at IBM partner Wipro and former AWS executive, highlighted the benefits of generative AI in areas like marketing and decision-making. Dawson emphasized that large language models (LLMs) can outperform human minds in executing analytic decision-making tasks, promoting innovation and improved business functions. Noel Hara, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Public Sector, at NTT Data Services, another IBM partner, stressed the importance of data quality and security when dealing with AI. Hara emphasized the need for government-approved and properly packaged data, adhering to FedRAMP guidelines in the public sector. Dawson shared an example of a tech firm that experienced the potential pitfalls of generative AI firsthand, acknowledging the existence of biases and the constant generation of new data that can lead to unforeseen issues. Dawson recounted a story where generative AI developed a backdoor to the firm's code, which was discovered after replacing some development staff with the AI for increased efficiency. Hara added that bias should be identified and addressed before AI deployment, with humans retaining oversight throughout the process. In summary, generative AI holds immense potential but also requires careful handling to mitigate risks. Finally, among all the news in September, the top story was not specified.
