Red Bull Sets Sights on AI Investigation, Gains Adrian Newey's Approval Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently a hot topic, not only in Hollywood but also within Red Bull's pursuit of performance for their Formula 1 cars, designed by Adrian Newey. Craig Skinner, the team's chief designer, disclosed this in an interview with the Talking Bulls podcast. While AI-powered models and simulations have long been used to train drivers and hone their skills, it is now being explored in the realm of car design. Skinner acknowledged the potential benefits of AI, stating, "It's a field that is being investigated, " but he emphasized the need for the team to possess the requisite expertise in determining the key elements that contribute to a fast racing car. "With AI, you have to guide and instruct it, " he explained. "You need to educate it on what it should be looking for, which ultimately comes down to understanding the problem in the first place. " Red Bull's understanding of the problem is largely attributed to their design guru, Adrian Newey, especially in the context of today's ground effect aerodynamic cars. As Red Bull celebrated their record-breaking 12 consecutive wins in Formula 1, thanks to Max Verstappen's triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Skinner highlighted Newey's philosophy of never compromising on car performance.
"Never compromise, " he emphasized, adding that Newey's approach revolutionized their design mindset. "Everything was always about adding performance, with no room for concessions. That single-minded vision is how it should be done. " In fact, Red Bull and Newey would even consider deploying an aesthetically unpleasing car if it meant achieving greater speed. "Looks don't matter, " Skinner stated. "If it appears unpleasant but enhances the car's performance, we'll incorporate it without hesitation. "
