The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing Hollywood companies in labor negotiations, recently released a comprehensive six-page memo outlining their offer on Tuesday evening. The memo details the August 11 proposal made to the Writers Guild of America during ongoing discussions for a new three-year contract. Additionally, a meeting between guild leaders and Hollywood CEOs took place prior to the release of the document. One notable proposal from the bargaining group suggests barring generative artificial intelligence-produced written material from being considered "literary material" in the contract. Furthermore, the AMPTP suggests providing quarterly reports to the union disclosing SVOD view hours per streaming project. The AMPTP is also offering higher-budget SVOD residual boosts, increasing from $72, 067 to $87, 546 per episode for three exhibition years. AMPTP president Carol Lombardini expressed the priority of ending the strike and addressing the hardships faced by individuals and businesses servicing the industry. Lombardini considers the studios' offer to address the writers' concerns and hopes the WGA will strive for the same resolution.
The WGA has been approached for comment by The Hollywood Reporter. In the previous talks on August 18, the AMPTP responded to the WGA's latest proposals, leaving the ball in the union's court. Meanwhile, Hollywood's top CEOs convened on Friday morning to discuss ongoing negotiations, though further details about the meeting are currently unavailable. These developments have emerged on the 114th day of the Writers Guild of America strike, surpassing the duration of the union's previous strike in 2007-08, which lasted 100 days. Formal discussions between management and labor recommenced on August 11, more than three months after the union initiated the strike on May 2 due to the absence of a new three-year contract. Since August 11, both sides have continuously engaged in negotiations, with management-side sources noting progress, though no resolution has been reached yet. According to one executive, there is a more positive momentum this week compared to the previous weeks. The Writers Guild of America last updated its members on the status of talks on August 18, stating that both sides had met during the week and continued exchanging proposals, with plans to meet again the following week.
