Ankler Podcast Discusses AI Impact on TV Writing and Oscar Race Insights

Brief news summary

In the latest episode of The Ankler Podcast, hosts Sean McNulty, Richard Rushfield, and Elaine Low gather from New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Richard humorously suggests recording on Thanksgiving to match Amazon's work ethic, a notion amusingly dismissed. The episode dives into a crucial issue for TV writers: AI has used around 140,000 scripts for training, transforming theoretical concerns into a pressing reality. This highlights AI's growing impact on writers, an issue lightly addressed in last year’s Writers Guild of America talks. Elaine Low leads a discussion on AI’s implications in the entertainment industry. Additionally, Katey Rich, the podcast's awards season expert, updates listeners on the Oscar race. With the season at its midpoint and no awards yet distributed, the post-Thanksgiving period becomes vital. The upcoming Gotham Awards and Critics prizes push producers to expedite screeners and marketing efforts to gain momentum as major accolades approach.

Sean McNulty (00:04): Welcome to The Ankler Podcast. I'm Sean McNulty from The Wakeup newsletter at The Ankler, recording from New York City on Tuesday, November 26th. Joining me in Los Angeles is Richard Rushfield, and in Chicago, Elaine Low. We're coming to you earlier this week because Richard suggested an Amazon-like recording session on Thanksgiving, which Elaine and I vetoed. So, Richard, have you been spending too much time with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy? Richard Rushfield (00:33): My policy is: skip Thanksgiving and Christmas if you don't show up. Sean McNulty (00:38): A core Ankler principle indeed!Today, we have a two-part episode. Later, Elaine will chat with Robert King, TV showrunner of "The Good Wife" and "Elsbeth, " about her recent piece highlighting TV writers' discovery that AI has trained itself on nearly 140, 000 of their scripts.

Elaine, do you recall the AI residual rate in last year's WGA agreement? Elaine Low (01:08): No. This year, AI fears have exploded for TV writers, becoming real threats after seeming abstract last year—but we'll discuss that later. Sean McNulty (01:22): Indeed. We also welcome Katey Rich, our awards season expert and the Prestige Junkie, to discuss the Oscar race as we're midway or two-thirds through. Katey, how would you define the current stage? Katey Rich (01:39): We're midway, yet no awards have been given out. That's about to change after Thanksgiving. The Gotham Awards, Critics' prizes, and more will soon speed things up. We're at the last desperate moment where everyone is sending screeners and swag, hoping for the best.
