Tudorache's interest in AI began in 2015, when he read Nick Bostrom's book, Superintelligence. This book explores the creation of AI superintelligence and its potential implications, making Tudorache realize the importance of regulating AI. In 2019, when he was elected to the European Parliament, Tudorache was determined to work on AI regulation if given the opportunity. His moment arrived when Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, announced AI regulation in her first speech in front of Parliament. Tudorache chaired a special committee on AI and led the negotiations to finalize the AI Act with other EU institutions. The journey was challenging, with intense negotiations, the emergence of ChatGPT, lobbying from tech companies, and changing stances by some of Europe's biggest economies. However, now that the AI Act has become law, Tudorache's work on it is complete, and he has no regrets. Despite criticism from civil society for not adequately protecting human rights and from the industry for being too restrictive, Tudorache expected the final compromise that the bill embodies.
After all, compromise is an integral part of politics. Tudorache acknowledges that there will be a learning curve and adjustments to be made during implementation. However, if everyone understands the true spirit of the legislation, he believes that the outcome can be positive. The AI Act will come into effect fully in two years, and Tudorache believes it will bring positive change to the tech industry. The Act's legally binding obligations for AI companies to be transparent about their model-building process will encourage responsible AI practices. According to Tudorache, this blueprint with defined boundaries and space for innovation will benefit society and provide businesses with predictability regarding AI usage. In conclusion, Tudorache sees the AI Act as a milestone that sets the stage for responsible AI and a path forward for businesses in the tech industry.
