In an effort to address these issues, BeatStars has introduced an initiative to promote "ethical AI" in music production. The program offers AI training to music producers and artists, with compensation for sharing their work. Collaboration is seen as essential in fostering the growth of independent music, according to Abe Batshon, CEO of BeatStars. He believes that incorporating generative AI elements can significantly scale digital musicians' businesses while preserving the integrity and originality of their music. With Spotify reporting over 100, 000 commercial song uploads daily, creators are under pressure to meet market demand. Batshon expects this number to continue rising as affordable creator tools become more accessible. BeatStars' partnership with Lemonaide empowers creators to generate millions of melodic and chord variations, a challenging aspect for digital-first artists. The emergence of ethical concerns regarding AI and music has disrupted the industry. Robert Harari, director of music and technology at Stevens Institute of Technology, explains that AI models are trained on existing musical recordings to create new compositions.
By analyzing an extensive collection of music, AI can simulate human-like tones. However, Harari emphasizes that this is not original music but rather a form of sampling and assembly. He proposes that AI sampling should be subject to the same licensing and copyright requirements as DJs who use samples in their compositions. The future of AI in music holds the potential for rapid advancement. AI-powered text-to-music systems that instantly produce customized albums could transform how we listen to music, according to Eric Alexander, CEO of Soundscape. This could pose challenges for human musicians, similar to digital painters competing with AI-generated art or copywriters against chatGPT's AI-generated text. However, Alexander envisions AI-powered artists becoming future festival headliners, showcasing their superiority even over the best human musicians. Musician Vernon Reid raises concerns about the convergence of AI with human-directed amorality and greed. He questions whether streaming platforms that already pay artists meager royalties will worsen as AI technologies become more prevalent and serve audiences with diminishing aesthetic discernment.
