Scientists from Caltech have used telescope data and artificial intelligence (AI) to create the first 3D video of flares around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. By analyzing data collected by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, the team reconstructed the 3D structure of the flares, revealing two bright features located about 75 million kilometers from the black hole.
The researchers used computational imaging tools and an AI technique called neural radiance fields (NeRF) to account for the bending of light due to the black hole's gravity. The study highlights the potential for AI and physics to work together in studying complex astronomical events and drawing new conclusions.
