According to data released by the customs administration, Taiwanese exports in the AI sector have experienced a significant surge. Over the past year, companies on the island have shipped more than $42 billion worth of graphic processing units and related equipment, which is a substantial increase compared to recent years. In June alone, these exports reached a value of $3. 5 billion, marking a remarkable growth of nearly 422% compared to the same period last year. The United States was the largest customer for these chips, produced by companies such as Nvidia Corp. , which are vital for supporting graphics and training AI services. Additionally, companies in the Netherlands and Hong Kong were also significant buyers. The Finance Ministry reported that total exports in June rose by 23. 5%, reaching nearly $40 billion.
Demand for computers and related hardware, particularly from emerging technology sectors, led to a significant increase of 324% in shipments, totaling $6. 6 billion. Beatrice Tsai, the chief statistician at the ministry, noted that Taiwan is entering the peak season for exports starting in July and expects that most exports this month will either remain flat or surpass those of June. Taiwan is renowned for being home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. , the world's most advanced chipmaker and a key supplier for companies like Nvidia and Apple Inc. Alongside its peers and a vast network of component suppliers, Taiwan produces a significant portion of the world's high-end semiconductors. Gary Ng, a senior economist at Natixis SA, stated that Taiwan is benefiting from the AI boom and the cyclical rebound in the tech industry, factors that will likely support exports in the upcoming months. After a slight slowdown in previous months, exports of integrated circuits have regained momentum. In June, shipments to the US increased by over 74%, and strong growth was also observed in exports to ASEAN countries, offsetting the impact of China's decelerating economic growth. The spike in GPU shipments is contributing to the record-high trade between Taiwan and the US. Last month, goods worth over $9 billion were shipped from Taiwan to the US, making it the third-highest month on record, following closely behind the previous high in March.
