Adam Christman, DVM, MBA: Zoetis Diagnostics is experiencing a significant surge in activity. Could you shed some light on the driving force behind it? Richard Goldstein, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), DECVIM-CA: A few years ago, Zoetis made a strategic decision to enter the field of diagnostics. As part of our efforts, we recruited a team of individuals, myself included, with deep insight into this area. We started from scratch and engaged in extensive conversations about how we could contribute to the veterinary profession. The products we have launched in the past couple of years have created a transformative experience. Obtaining a diagnosis is of utmost importance to veterinarians and veterinary technicians, as it greatly impacts therapy. However, it shouldn't be a cumbersome process. Our aim is to ensure that they have the necessary support, access to peer opinions, and user-friendly tools. During veterinary school, students are surrounded by specialists who are readily available. However, this accessibility reduces once they start practicing. Our goal was to provide comprehensive support to every veterinarian and technician, equipping them with the tools they require for conducting tests. Adam Christman, DVM, MBA: Can you highlight the distinguishing features of the Vetscan Imagyst analyzer compared to other similar products in the market? Richard Goldstein, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), DECVIM-CA: Our objective is to bring the capabilities of a reference lab directly into veterinary clinics, minimizing the need to send samples out for analysis or rely on external labs. The Imagyst analyzer is an 8-pound, high-resolution scanner that captures images of samples and slides. These images are then securely stored in the cloud. Subsequently, they can be shared with a clinical pathologist who will provide results within just 2 hours. This service is available 24/7, 365 days a year. With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), we are able to expedite and streamline certain straightforward results, making them quicker and more cost-effective.
It's important to underline that AI will never replace a clinical pathologist, but when the AI algorithms are reliable, there are advantages in utilizing this technology. For instance, we have introduced a fecal application that produces results within 10 minutes. Moreover, our dermatology application analyzes yeast and bacteria found in ears or on the skin. The challenge faced by many veterinary practices today is the shortage of personnel to handle the workload. By harnessing technology, we can free up veterinarians and technicians to focus on the well-being of the animals and their owners, rather than being stretched thin between microscopic examination, test result interpretation, and caregiving. Adam Christman, DVM, MBA: How can AI benefit practice owners, veterinarians, and even pet owners? Richard Goldstein, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), DECVIM-CA: AI is an incredible tool, but it must be used responsibly. It will never replace the expertise of a human professional. Rather, AI should be trained by these experts. For example, if a veterinarian provides specific information about a skin condition to the AI, the AI will only possess the knowledge that the veterinarian imparts. Every AI application we introduce undergoes a meticulous validation process to ensure that the results are on par with those of a specialist. Additionally, human oversight is vital for AI to be effective. In situations where an AI application is utilized to analyze images and there are questions or concerns, or if a deeper examination is desired, we offer an add-on expert review. With a simple click of a button, the images can be sent to a clinical pathologist for further analysis. Adam Christman, DVM, MBA: Could you walk us through a case that demonstrates the use of the virtual laboratory? Richard Goldstein, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM), DECVIM-CA: The virtual lab serves as a valuable tool to alleviate anxiety in any given situation. Imagine an emergency department filled with pets awaiting medical attention, where a dog in the back is experiencing vomiting episodes. Within our network of specialists, we offer veterinary professionals the opportunity to schedule a consultation at any time, whether they are dealing with a complex case, require additional support, or simply desire an extra level of preparation. The virtual lab maintains a record of all previously conducted tests, and if any tests are missing, they can easily be uploaded to provide a comprehensive profile of the situation at hand. It serves as an encompassing platform that merges point-of-care capabilities with a reference lab, thereby offering veterinarians a modern, efficient, and supportive approach to their practice.
