Pioneering AI Camera Detects Impaired Drivers in Devon and Cornwall

Brief news summary

Acusensus has introduced the Heads-Up machine, an AI-driven camera designed to detect drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This technology is currently being tested in Devon and Cornwall, where it identifies signs of impairment and notifies police for roadside checks. Geoff Collins, UK general manager of Acusensus, is excited about these pioneering trials. The mobile cameras are discreet and highly effective in identifying offenders. Acusensus has a history of helping authorities catch drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts. Impaired driving greatly increases the risk of fatal accidents, so the Heads-Up system is expected to enhance road safety and save lives. Superintendent Simon Jenkinson emphasized the project's significance as part of the Vision Zero South West road safety initiative and highlighted the importance of innovative technology. This trial coincides with December’s drink-driving awareness campaigns, aiming to create safer roads.

Motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs might now be detected by a pioneering AI camera, tested for the first time in Devon and Cornwall. The advanced Heads-Up system identifies driving behavior that suggests impairment from alcohol or drugs. Police stationed further along the road can stop the motorist, engage with them, and conduct roadside tests for alcohol and drugs. Geoff Collins, UK general manager of Acusensus, the company behind the camera, stated, "We are thrilled to conduct the world's first trials of this technology in Devon and Cornwall. " This camera can be swiftly relocated to any road within the counties without advance notice, catching drivers off guard until law enforcement halts them. Mr.

Collins added, "We all benefit from detecting driver impairment before it leads to life-altering incidents. " Acusensus cameras have previously aided police in apprehending drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts while driving. Considering that drink-drivers are six times more likely to be in a fatal crash, Devon & Cornwall Police hope the Heads-Up system will be life-saving. "Our officers can't be everywhere, " said Supt Simon Jenkinson, whose team oversees 14, 000 miles of roads in both counties. "As part of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, we're committed to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. "Adopting new technologies like these cameras is crucial in our efforts. " The trial runs through December, aligning with other drink-driving campaigns.
