AI companies will be required to report their safety test results to the US government, according to the Biden administration. The White House AI Council will convene on Monday to assess the progress made on the executive order signed by President Joe Biden three months ago, which aims to regulate the rapidly advancing technology. One of the key objectives outlined in the order was the mandate for AI companies to share important information, including safety test results, with the Commerce Department. Ben Buchanan, the White House special adviser on AI, emphasized that the government wants to ensure the safety of AI systems before they are released to the public. While software companies have committed to certain categories for safety tests, there is currently no common standard for these tests.

To address this, the National Institute of Standards and Technology will develop a standardized framework for evaluating safety. Considering the economic and national security implications of AI, the federal government is prioritizing its management through congressional legislation, collaborations with other countries and the European Union, and the development of rules. The Commerce Department has also drafted a rule pertaining to US cloud companies that provide servers to foreign AI developers. Additionally, several federal agencies, including Defense, Transportation, Treasury, and Health and Human Services, have conducted risk assessments to evaluate the use of AI in critical national infrastructure. The government has also increased its recruitment of AI experts and data scientists within federal agencies to ensure preparedness in regulating this transformative technology.
