Taco Bell Harnesses AI for Efficient Drive-Thru Experience

Brief news summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into the fast-food industry, notably in drive-thrus. McDonald's previously trialed voice AI but stopped due to order inaccuracies reported by customers. Now, Taco Bell is launching AI systems after two years of testing. Despite initial customer doubts, tests show the AI can manage complex orders accurately, such as handling a 15-item order. There are concerns that AI could lead to job losses, as seen with Geek Squad's layoffs due to technological progress. However, Taco Bell claims their AI system is intended to streamline operations and reduce employee workloads. An employee at a Taco Bell using the AI affirmed it makes his job easier, enabling him to focus on other tasks more efficiently. Yum! Brands, Taco Bell's parent company, is trialing the AI system in over 100 U.S. locations and experimenting with it in KFCs in Australia, aiming to optimize operations throughout its franchises.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding from social media and search engines to drive-thrus. In recent years, AI has grown rapidly despite mixed reactions, and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Previously, McDonald's tested voice AI technology in drive-thrus but discontinued it due to customer complaints about order inaccuracies. Now, after two years of testing, Taco Bell is ready to implement AI in their systems. One viewer expressed doubts, emailing about issues with ordering an item without onions, prompting us to test it ourselves. The AI system greeted us, took the order swiftly, attempted to upsell, and even asked if we wanted to round up for a donation. Impressively, it got our entire 15-item order correct. Online, concerns have been raised about AI affecting jobs, fearing it could replace human workers.

These concerns are valid, as seen when Geek Squad field agents lost their jobs. Although the company promised severance packages for those laid off, it left a bad impression. Taco Bell claims their AI system is meant to streamline processes for employees, freeing up their time. An employee at a location using the new system told KRCR that he agrees, stating it made his job easier: “It’s helping me out. I used to double task taking cash and orders, and now she does a really good job and is learning, so it helps me in the window. ” Yum!Brands, which owns Taco Bell and other fast-food chains, is testing the AI system in over 100 stores across America and in their KFCs in Australia.
