On Wednesday, researchers and religious leaders shared the results of a two-month artistic experiment conducted in a Swiss Catholic chapel. The project featured a computer screen avatar of "Jesus" placed in a confessional, where it answered visitors' questions about faith, morality, and contemporary issues using Scripture-based responses. About 900 anonymous conversations were recorded, with some visitors returning multiple times. The organizers deemed the project a success, noting that many visitors left feeling contemplative and found the interaction straightforward. Chapel theologian Marco Schmid, who led the initiative, observed that participants engaged seriously with the avatar rather than joking around.
Schmid emphasized that the "AI Jesus, " described as a "Jesus-like" persona, was an artistic endeavor designed to provoke thought about the relationship between the digital and divine. It was never intended to replace human interaction, sacramental confessions with a priest, or conserve pastoral resources. "It was clear to people that it was a computer and not a confession, " Schmid noted. "It wasn't programmed to offer absolutions or prayers. " Schmid added that the project was meant to be temporary, but there are discussions about possibly reviving it in the future.
