Swiss Chapel Explores Faith with AI 'Jesus' Avatar in Artistic Experiment

Brief news summary

A two-month art experiment took place in a Swiss Catholic chapel, featuring an avatar resembling "Jesus" inside a confessional. This digital Jesus engaged visitors in conversations about faith, morality, and modern life, providing Scripture-based responses. The experiment resulted in around 900 anonymous conversations, with many visitors returning for more interactions. Organizers deemed the initiative successful, observing that participants engaged deeply and left in contemplation. Theologian Marco Schmid, who led the project, emphasized that the AI Jesus was an artistic exploration of the connection between technology and spirituality, not a replacement for personal interactions or religious confessions with priests. Schmid clarified that participants were aware they were interacting with a computer, not seeking absolution or prayer. The installation aimed to provoke thought about digital and divine intersections, with possible plans to revive the project in the future.

On Wednesday, researchers and religious leaders shared the results of a two-month artistic experiment conducted in a Swiss Catholic chapel. The project featured a computer screen avatar of "Jesus" placed in a confessional, where it answered visitors' questions about faith, morality, and contemporary issues using Scripture-based responses. About 900 anonymous conversations were recorded, with some visitors returning multiple times. The organizers deemed the project a success, noting that many visitors left feeling contemplative and found the interaction straightforward. Chapel theologian Marco Schmid, who led the initiative, observed that participants engaged seriously with the avatar rather than joking around.

Schmid emphasized that the "AI Jesus, " described as a "Jesus-like" persona, was an artistic endeavor designed to provoke thought about the relationship between the digital and divine. It was never intended to replace human interaction, sacramental confessions with a priest, or conserve pastoral resources. "It was clear to people that it was a computer and not a confession, " Schmid noted. "It wasn't programmed to offer absolutions or prayers. " Schmid added that the project was meant to be temporary, but there are discussions about possibly reviving it in the future.
