Brief news summary

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an artificial intelligence program that can learn from smartphone users' behaviors to send timely reminders to close attention-grabbing apps. This AI system effectively reduced the frequency of app openings, including popular platforms such as TikTok. Rather than sending random notifications, the program uses machine learning to personalize interventions, ensuring they arrive at the moment most likely to be effective in tearing users away from their smartphones.

A smartphone user's behaviors can be learned by an AI program, enabling timely pop-up reminders to be sent regarding when to close attention-grabbing apps. This effective system has successfully reduced the frequency of app usage, such as TikTok. Getting our attention away from our smartphones is a challenging task, especially due to the designed addictiveness of apps like Instagram and TikTok.

However, an artificial intelligence system that prompts breaks can help minimize screen time. Simply receiving a random notification encouraging us to stop doomscrolling might not always be enough to detach someone from their phone. Nonetheless, machine learning can personalize this intervention, ensuring it arrives at the most opportune moment, increasing its chances of success. According to Xuhai Xu from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this personalized approach can make a significant difference.
