U. S. senators are expressing concern over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) and plan to hold hearings later this year to explore legislative safeguards, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer emphasized the need for bipartisan collaboration in creating AI legislation that fosters innovation while addressing the risks associated with the technology. He announced the Senate's intention to convene the first-ever AI Insight Forums to gather insights from experts in the field. The senators' concerns were heightened after the discussions around the use of AI to manipulate biological weapons.

To address these concerns, lawmakers globally are exploring measures to mitigate the risks to national security and the economy. Schumer revealed that senators were briefed by experts from various agencies, including the U. S. Energy Department, the National Science Foundation, and DARPA. He also noted that the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to send a bill to the full Senate, proposing the appointment of a chief AI officer in each federal agency and the establishment of a coordinating council for these officers. In other news, Mobileye Global reported better-than-expected quarterly revenue due to strong demand for its driver-assistance technology, leading the company to expect a smaller operating loss for the full year.
