Amazon has increased its investment in Anthropic by an additional $2. 75 billion, bringing the total investment in the artificial intelligence company to $4 billion. This new investment completes the commitment made by Amazon in September, which included an initial investment of $1. 25 billion. In a press release on Wednesday (March 27), Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of data and AI at Amazon Web Services (AWS), highlighted Anthropic's visionary work in generative AI and the opportunities it presents for customers to innovate with the support of Amazon's infrastructure, such as AWS Tranium and Amazon Bedrock. As part of the agreement, Anthropic is utilizing AWS as its primary cloud provider.
Additionally, Anthropic will utilize AWS Tranium and Inferentia chips for future AI models and has committed to providing AWS customers with access to future generations of its foundation models through Amazon Bedrock. The release also mentions that Anthropic's powerful AI models, known as the Claude 3 family, are accessible on Amazon Bedrock and offer advanced intelligence and new vision capabilities. Sivasubramanian expressed excitement about the collaboration with Anthropic and the transformative potential of generative AI. While Amazon's investment is significant, it is worth noting that Microsoft's investment in OpenAI, a leading AI startup, exceeds $10 billion.
