Amazon has introduced Project PI, short for "Private Investigator, " which combines generative AI and computer vision to detect damage or discrepancies in products before they are delivered to customers. The process involves scanning products as they pass through a tunnel, with a computer vision program analyzing the images to identify any damage. If an issue is detected, the item is isolated, and the system examines the defect to investigate similar occurrences and determine the underlying cause. Currently implemented in multiple North American warehouses, Amazon plans to expand Project PI to additional sites throughout the year.
The company had previously introduced a system that flags frequently returned items to preemptively address potential issues before customers place orders. These initiatives aim to provide a better customer experience, benefit Amazon's operations, and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. Amazon's human employees review the items flagged by Project PI, deciding whether to sell them at a discounted price on the Second Chance resell site or donate them elsewhere.
