HP is upgrading its OmniBook line with the forthcoming HP OmniBook Ultra. This new model will feature an AMD Ryzen AI 300-series processor with integrated AMD Radeon 800M graphics, up to 32GB of RAM, and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports with 40Gbps speeds. Priced at $1, 449. 99, it will be available from August onwards. The HP OmniBook Ultra will also receive a software update in the future to become one of the first Copilot Plus PCs not powered by an ARM-based processor. The OmniBook brand was revived in May with the introduction of the HP OmniBook X AI laptop, which, like most of the Copilot Plus PCs announced at that time, was powered by an ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processor. While the Snapdragon X Elite had a neural processing unit rated at 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS), the new OmniBook Ultra, with the AMD Ryzen AI 300 series, offers "up to 55 TOPS of NPU performance, " according to HP. Unlike the ARM-based processors, the AMD Ryzen AI 300 series is an x86-based processor, providing enhanced compatibility with a wider range of Windows applications.
However, certain older applications may still require emulation to run on a Windows PC powered by the Snapdragon X Elite or other ARM-based processors. Both OmniBooks come with 14-inch, 2240 x 1400-pixel LCD touchscreens, but the Ultra model boasts a few updates. It features two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports (along with a USB 3. 2 Gen 2 Type-A port), an upgraded 9MP webcam, and quad speakers with DTS:X Ultra support, as opposed to stereo speakers. Weighing in at 3. 48 pounds, the OmniBook Ultra is approximately half a pound heavier than the OmniBook X AI. This is partly due to its larger 68Wh battery, which is bigger than the X AI's 59Wh battery. However, despite the larger battery, the OmniBook Ultra offers slightly less battery life, with a maximum of up to 13 hours of average use or up to 21 hours of local video playback (not streamed).
