ASRock (via momomo_us) has rebranded their Navi 31-based AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX WS graphics cards as part of the new Creator series, which is specifically designed for generative AI workloads and workstation setups. These WS series graphics cards were originally unveiled during Computex 2024. An interesting development is that both the WS series (now the Creator series GPUs) are the first AMD cards to adopt the 16-pin power connector (12V-2x6), a feature previously seen in Nvidia's GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards. Originally, the cards used two 8-pin PCIe connectors, but it is logical for such high-performance graphics cards to transition to the newer standard, especially as power supplies supporting multi-GPU clusters now often offer multiple 16-pin connectors. Additionally, using a single cable per graphics card helps reduce cable clutter. ASRock's decision to incorporate the 16-pin power connector is more a matter of convenience than necessity, as the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX do not consume a significant amount of power during workloads to warrant the use of the 12V-2x6 power connector. It is possible that ASRock may provide a 12V-2x6 adapter with these Creator series graphics cards. The Creator series features a dual-slot design with a single blower-style fan and a vapor chamber, making it well-suited for multi-GPU environments with diverse workloads.
While it offers the necessary airflow and reliability for such environments, the trade-off is usually a higher noise level. Additionally, the cards do not include unnecessary features like RGB lighting effects, which are commonly found on workstation graphics cards. Although AMD's options are appealing in terms of performance, one may question how many users would choose these AMD cards over Nvidia's alternatives. To AMD's credit, they have addressed their limitations by releasing firmware documentation for RDNA 3 GPUs and progressively open-sourcing their software. In such situations, the best AIB partners can do is offer an option for users to decide based on their specific workload and environment requirements.
