Sports fans are constantly looking for an engaging viewing experience when watching live sporting events. Technological advancements have raised expectations, and broadcasters are finding creative ways to keep fans engaged, such as using graphics, on-demand game data, and video replays and highlights. The World Cup, particularly the women's edition, is highly anticipated, and Fox Sports, a unit of FOX Corp. , has taken a proactive approach in enhancing the viewing experience by introducing an innovative AI-powered feature called "Catch Up With Highlights. " This feature autonomously generates recap videos and game highlights in real time and was initially launched during last year's FIFA World Cup. Fox partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the AI-powered replay feature. Julie Souza, head of sports at AWS, stated that the abundance of data available in modern sports presents exciting opportunities for fans and professional leagues. The "Catch Up With Highlights" feature is available through the Fox Sports App in the US. As this year's Women's World Cup is being held in New Zealand and Australia, the time zone difference may pose a challenge for US fans who want to watch the games live. However, "Catch Up With Highlights" aims to solve this problem by providing viewers with an easy tool to catch up on key plays they may have missed if they tune in after kickoff.

Phil Martin, FOX's vice president of data products and machine learning strategy, explained that the feature was designed with sports fans in mind to make sports enjoyable and accessible for everyone. The technology behind "Catch Up With Highlights" utilizes audio cues and camera angles to identify significant plays in games. AWS services, including Amazon Rekognition, are used to cut clips and create a condensed highlight reel of the game, available in real time. The clips are then assembled with transitions and made accessible to fans through the FOX Sports app and connected devices. The technology works in an automated manner, synchronizing events on the field with the data feed. AWS services such as Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon S3 are also incorporated into "Catch Up With Highlights" for storing sports data and delivering live video to fans. The feature was initially developed for the 2022 Men's World Cup and has been rolled out for other sports, including USFL and MLB. FOX plans to introduce this feature to football broadcasts later this year.
