AI-generated images are flooding Facebook, causing concern about real people engaging with them. These images, such as shrimp Jesus and three-armed fairies surrounding a baby, are overwhelming the platform and making it more depressing. While Facebook initially prioritized content from legitimate sources, it later shifted focus to posts from family and friends. As a result, the feed is filled with group posts, ads, and AI-generated images, some of which go viral. Many users engage with this content without realizing it's artificial.
Researchers have found that some page operators behind these images engage in manipulative behaviors, such as stealing pages and adding fake followers. The true purpose of these pages remains unclear, but they may be scamming users or boosting misinformation. Facebook is aware of the issue and plans to introduce generative AI labels later this year. However, users would prefer not to see any AI-generated pictures in their feed.
