In the same week when the BBC received backlash for using artificial intelligence in promotional material for "Doctor Who, " the head of the public broadcaster revealed their bold plans for AI usage in the future. During a notable speech at the Royal Television Society in London, director general Tim Davie outlined the BBC's future direction and its role for the UK, which will involve the adoption of new technology. "We will actively deploy AI based on our own terms, always ensuring human creative control, supporting rights holders, and maintaining our editorial standards. However, we will also launch tools that assist us in building relevance, " he stated. Davie further disclosed that the BBC is currently collaborating with major tech companies on BBC-specific pilot projects. The most promising initiatives will be implemented in the coming months. Davie emphasized the significance of the broadcaster's AI ambitions, expressing their desire to use it in fact-checking, source translation, reformatting, and the provision of more personalized services. "In support of this, we are developing unique ethical algorithms that enhance personalization without solely narrowing an individual's recommendations.

We want to maintain factors like serendipity, curiosity, and an interest in stories deemed important by our BBC editors, " he explained. Additionally, during the speech, Davie reaffirmed the BBC's commitment to relocating a substantial amount of content production, editorial leadership, and decision-making activities outside of London. Their aim is for over 60% of the BBC's TV productions to be based outside of the capital by 2026.
