President Joe Biden was pictured listening during a meeting with the presidential advisory board on historically Black colleges and universities in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington on Monday, September 25, 2023. In a recent statement, President Biden revealed that the White House is planning to introduce an executive order addressing artificial intelligence in the near future. "This fall, I will be taking executive action, and my administration will continue to collaborate with bipartisan legislation, " said Biden, emphasizing that the aim is for America to lead responsible AI innovation. Although specific details of the executive order were not provided, Biden's remarks shed light on the administration's anticipated timeline. The executive order will complement a prior proposal by the administration for an "AI Bill of Rights. " Advocacy groups have been urging the Biden administration to enforce the AI Bill of Rights as part of any executive order related to AI.

Concurrently, the US Senate is working to educate lawmakers on artificial intelligence in preparations for upcoming months of legislative work in this area. During the meeting, Biden discussed recent conversations he has had with AI experts and leaders. He highlighted the diverse perspectives on AI's potential and the associated risks, stressing his keen interest in the subject. Biden further explained that he has convened key experts to explore how AI can be harnessed for positive outcomes while safeguarding against potential risks. "We should not deceive ourselves, " Biden cautioned. "There are profound risks if we do not handle it properly. " He reaffirmed America's commitment to collaborating with international partners, including the United Kingdom, to establish safeguards for AI. The meeting also provided presidential advisers with an opportunity to present various use cases for AI to Biden. Maria Zuber, co-chair of the panel, mentioned examples such as predicting climate change-related extreme weather events, creating novel materials, and gaining deeper understanding of the origins of the universe.
