Lawmakers in California are addressing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in businesses and state agencies, particularly its impact on gig workers. However, software engineer Jean-Paul Mugrditchian sees AI as a source of new job opportunities. To promote responsible AI use, lawmakers have introduced the AI Accountability Act Bill (SB 896), which includes provisions for informing users about AI interactions. Professor Ahmed Banafa considers these measures crucial for safe AI development. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence has successfully utilized AI to detect illegal dumping under the Clean Water Act, showcasing its potential to enhance the environment and human well-being. Mugrditchian believes that AI can replace repetitive, hazardous, and tiring tasks, allowing individuals to focus on intellectually stimulating work. The California AI Accountability Act Bill also supports investments in AI education and workforce development.

California legislators are expressing concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in both the private sector and state agencies. Jean-Paul Mugrditchian, a software engineer who previously worked for startups, currently drives for ride-hailing services to make ends meet. However, he acknowledges that the job barely pays minimum wage after accounting for expenses. Mugrditchian utilizes the flexibility of working with Lyft and Uber to lay the groundwork for his next venture. He recognizes the influence of AI advancements, particularly the rise of autonomous vehicles, on gig workers. While job elimination is a consequence of previous industrial revolutions, Mugrditchian believes that civilization has always progressed, ultimately leading to the creation of new employment opportunities. Simultaneously, lawmakers are striving to stay attuned to these developments. State Senator Bill Dodd introduced the AI Accountability Act Bill, or SB 896.

This bill aims to guide the decision-making process of state agencies in their utilization of automated technologies. One provision mandates notification of users when interacting with AI systems. Dodd criticizes the legislature for imposing regulations on businesses and other entities without applying the same standards to itself. Ahmed Banafa, an engineering professor at San Jose State, asserts that legislation like the AI Accountability Act Bill serves as an essential starting point for the government, AI companies, and consumers in an era where the AI landscape undergoes rapid transformations and uncertainties. Banafa believes that collaboration among these three parties ensures responsible and safe AI usage. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence highlights the potential benefits of AI. They are conducting a pilot program that utilizes computer vision and aerial imagery to identify illegal dumping under the Clean Water Act in near real-time. This application demonstrates how AI can enhance environmental compliance and improve human conditions. Mugrditchian firmly believes in the positive prospects of AI, asserting that it will elevate individuals' capabilities and gradually eradicate monotonous, hazardous, and physically demanding tasks, which will be replaced by machines. Apart from the AI Accountability Act Bill, the legislation encourages investment in AI education and the development of AI competency within California's workforce.
