The lack of representation of Black psychologists poses a challenge for Black individuals seeking therapy that understands their unique experiences. To address this issue, AI chatbots are being designed to offer tailored therapy for Black individuals. While there are potential risks and biases associated with AI therapy, some chatbots are showing promise in providing culturally competent support. These chatbots acknowledge and validate the challenges faced by Black individuals, offering guidance on topics like code-switching and experiences of racism.

While AI chatbots cannot replace human therapists, they can be a valuable additional resource for Black individuals who lack access to Black professionals or as a supplement to therapy sessions. It is crucial to prioritize training non-Black professionals on the Black experience and promote pathways for more Black women to become therapists. By creating AI therapists specifically designed for and by Black women, we can work towards a reality where Black women receive the mental health care they deserve.
