This new ChatGPT feature helps streamline interactions with the AI chatbot. Within a Project, ChatGPT retains specific instructions and relevant information. The Projects feature is now being launched for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams subscribers. Day Seven of the 12 Days of OpenAI didn’t involve conversing with Santa Claus like the previous day, but the new Projects feature for ChatGPT would certainly interest his elves. OpenAI CPO Kevin Weil and his team introduced Projects with a demo illustrating how it can organize your interactions with ChatGPT, including files and data. Picture a digital version of a cluttered desk with papers symbolizing your ChatGPT interactions. Projects act like a virtual file drawer filled with neatly labeled folders created by an assistant who has read all those papers. To start a Project, you must give it a name and assign it a color to make locating it easier. You can then group related chats and upload any pertinent files. You can also set specific instructions for ChatGPT to follow within that particular Project space. This means if you’re working on a screenplay or building a website, you don’t have to remind ChatGPT of the details each time you start a new chat. You can incorporate existing chats into a Project, begin new ones, and even integrate data from your files during conversations. Additionally, features like SearchGPT and Canvas operate seamlessly within the Project space. If Projects seems familiar, it’s because this feature is offered by some of ChatGPT's competitors, notably Claude, Anthropic's AI chatbot. OpenAI is catching up by providing a solution to a common annoyance. Up until now, tracking conversations with ChatGPT often involved dealing with a cluttered sidebar and a lot of scrolling. While OpenAI has made progress with features like memory and customization, the ability to bundle chats and files into coherent, themed groups is as significant as transitioning from Post-It notes to binders. Projects are also useful for website creation.
You can upload design files and content ideas and specify your preferred coding languages. ChatGPT can help generate code for the site and refine any design or content aspects. Unlike typical ChatGPT coding assistance, the AI remembers your previous work together since it occurs within the same Project space. Tidy AI Weil and his team demonstrated Projects in various ways it might be used. Since Santa was absent, he showed how to organize a Secret Santa exchange using Projects instead. Instead of toggling between spreadsheet tabs and repetitively copying-pasting information, you create a Project with the agreed rules and budget, including a spreadsheet of everyone’s wish lists. All your Secret Santa information is stored there, and you can instruct ChatGPT to manage it, including sending anonymous emails with gift assignments. Of course, a few potential issues exist. One is that Projects’ effectiveness relies on how clearly you communicate with ChatGPT. As the demo illustrates, being vague can cause undesired outcomes (like revealing Secret Santa details). Moreover, organizing through Projects won’t compensate for sloppy prompts or overlooking output errors. Currently, you need a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Teams subscription to access Projects, although free-tier users will have access soon. They might need a reminder, though, as they don’t have Projects available yet. You might also like
