Google Introduces 'Quick Insert' AI Feature for Chromebooks

Microsoft recently introduced a new Copilot button for Windows laptops, and now Google is following suit with a unique feature for Chromebooks called "Quick Insert. " Instead of a dedicated AI assistant button, Quick Insert provides contextually relevant tools directly related to the content on the screen. This feature is launching as part of a broader update for Chromebooks, which aims to enhance their functionality with several new AI tools. Notable devices releasing this month include the Lenovo Chromebook Duet and the ultra-slim Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Quick Insert replaces the traditional Caps Lock key on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus, previously occupied by the launcher button. While future Chromebook Plus models will feature this button, older Chromebooks can still access the functionality using the Launcher + F key combination. Pressing the Quick Insert button opens an overlay similar to a right-click menu, offering features like emojis, GIFs, Caps Lock shortcuts, and access to Google’s Help Me Write AI function. It also allows users to view recently accessed websites and search Google Drive for quick file attachments. Additionally, Chromebook Plus models will gain features such as "Help Me Read, " which summarizes webpage content and can engage in chatbot-like interactions, and the popular Recorder app, which transcribes audio in real-time and labels speakers. Live Translate will also be introduced, functioning across any third-party app to facilitate real-time translation. For video calls, Chromebook Plus devices will feature a studio-style microphone to enhance voice clarity and optimize lighting during calls.

However, these specific features are exclusive to Chromebook Plus models, designed to meet strict hardware specifications ensuring a certain quality standard. Despite this, all Chromebooks will receive some updates. For example, "Welcome Recap" offers a summary of recent activities, and Focus Mode will enable Do Not Disturb settings. Users will also benefit from YouTube Music integration for soundscapes and file pinning options in the launcher tray. Notably, Google's Gemini chatbot is now available on all Chromebooks, although free access to premium services is limited based on the model. New hardware includes the updated Lenovo Duet 2-in-1 detachable laptop, which features an 11-inch 2K display, MediaTek Kompanio 838 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and is priced at $349. The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus, offering a lightweight 2. 58-pound design with a 15. 6-inch OLED display, Intel Core i3 1000U processor, and 256 GB of storage, is also launching this month. Both these laptops will be available in October, alongside the software updates enhancing the overall Chromebook experience.
