A church in Lucerne, Switzerland, has placed a computer inside a confessional booth, allowing churchgoers to engage with an "AI Jesus. " This large language model, trained on theological texts, can communicate in 100 languages. However, users are cautioned against sharing personal information due to privacy concerns. The project, called "Deus in Machina, " was not meant to replicate a traditional confession, but rather to explore interactions with an AI Jesus. Marco Schmid, one of the theologians involved, said they were interested in people's reactions and the topics they would discuss. Schmid and his team, already experienced with VR and AR, decided to create an AI Jesus chatbot.
After considering various avatars, they chose Jesus as the most fitting figure. Over two months, more than 1, 000 people engaged with the AI Jesus, with over two-thirds describing it as a "spiritual experience. " Schmid was surprised by the positive response, noting the variety of experiences people had. Despite some inconsistencies, Schmid was relieved that the AI didn't make any problematic statements, an issue other chatbots have faced. While he doubts the long-term benefit of such an AI, he sees its potential as a tool for discussing religion. Schmid remarked on the desire for conversations with figures like Jesus, highlighting people's interest in seeking answers and listening to such discussions. For more on AI, OpenAI research indicates even its best models often give incorrect answers.
