The constant barrage of automated deepfakes, disinformation, and cyberattacks from foreign adversaries is a major concern for the CIA's AI director. Raman highlighted that AI enables these activities on a scale and speed that was previously impossible, making it more accessible and easier for individuals to utilize. The CIA is particularly monitoring China's AI program, as it poses a significant national security threat due to its undemocratic approach to leveraging this influential emerging technology.

Raman expressed China's expansive growth in this field as a worrisome factor. However, despite the advantages it brings to adversaries, AI also equips the CIA with essential capabilities, allowing agents to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns and trends that would otherwise be challenging or impossible to detect. By automating menial tasks, AI allows intelligence officers to dedicate more time to strategic endeavors. Raman also discussed the CIA's efforts in developing an AI chatbot to assist with research and writing internally. Nonetheless, to sustain innovation, the agency must continue to recruit individuals with the necessary skill set for this kind of work as the demand significantly outstrips the supply, according to Raman.
