NVIDIA's founder and CEO Jensen Huang, alongside the King of Denmark, inaugurated Denmark's largest sovereign AI supercomputer, Gefion, designed to advance fields like quantum computing, clean energy, and biotechnology. This first AI supercomputer, named after a Danish goddess, is powered by 1, 528 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and utilizes NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking. The Gefion supercomputer is operated by the Danish Center for AI Innovation (DCAI), funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark. It was launched in a Copenhagen event where King Frederik X, Jensen, and DCAI CEO Nadia Carlsten symbolically turned it on.
Jensen emphasized that Gefion represents the emergence of a new intelligence industry, transforming how AI can reflect a nation's data and culture. The supercomputer is expected to tackle global issues like infectious diseases, climate change, and food security, with a pilot phase starting soon to explore AI applications in these areas. For instance, the Danish Meteorological Institute will utilize it to enhance weather forecasts significantly, while researchers at the University of Copenhagen will conduct large-scale simulations of quantum circuits, making strides toward "quantum supremacy. " Collaborations involving the University of Copenhagen and industry leaders are set to advance genomic research and vaccine design using Gefion's capabilities. Startups like Go Autonomous and Teton are also engaging with Gefion to develop innovative AI technologies. Overall, Gefion positions Denmark to address major scientific challenges and engage in transformative projects across various sectors, supporting advancements in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and more through partnerships with NVIDIA.
