Denver Health Partners with Nabla to Enhance Physician Efficiency through AI

Brief news summary

Denver Health has teamed up with Nabla, a cutting-edge AI firm, to enhance patient care by alleviating the administrative workload on physicians. Alex Lebrun, Nabla’s CEO, points out that burdensome paperwork detracts from doctors' essential duties. Dr. Daniel Kortsch supports this initiative, noting that technology can significantly improve interactions with patients. Nabla's innovative system enables doctors to communicate with patients via smartphones, transforming these interactions into user-friendly formats. To protect privacy, the original audio recordings and detailed transcripts are deleted after creating concise summaries. This aims to minimize “pajama time,” the additional paperwork hours physicians often spend after work. Dr. Kortsch observes that the system streamlines communication and boosts physician satisfaction by reducing documentation demands. Although patients can choose to opt out, many value the personalized care provided. Lebrun takes pride in the positive impact of their technology on the healthcare sector and its role in attracting talented professionals. Ultimately, this partnership aims to improve healthcare delivery while fostering stronger connections between physicians and their patients.

DENVER — Denver Health has announced a collaboration with the artificial intelligence (AI) company Nabla to enable physicians to concentrate more on patient care rather than administrative tasks. As per Nabla CEO Alex Lebrun, for every hour doctors spend with patients, they often dedicate two hours to completing notes and handling insurance documentation. “Nobody undergoes 15 years of medical training to do that. They dislike it, ” Lebrun remarked. “We founded Nabla five years ago after recognizing that physicians were allocating more time to paperwork than to patient care. ” Dr. Daniel Kortsch, the associate chief medical information officer and the associate chief of AI and digital health at Denver Health, played a pivotal role in identifying the necessity of collaborating with an AI firm, ultimately selecting Nabla from several options. Now, medical professionals can initiate patient consultations by launching the Nabla app on their mobile devices, which records the dialogue, transcribes it, and formats it into a familiar structure for physicians. To ensure patient confidentiality, the full audio recording and transcription are deleted after processing, with only the summary and structured notes kept. “Our goal is for doctors to spend ample time with patients and then shift away from administrative burdens to focus on what truly matters: delivering the best care possible, ” Kortsch explained. “We want to prevent them from having to work late at night. Our aim is for them to complete their work during work hours and then disconnect. ” In recent years, many medical professionals have experienced an increase in “pajama time, ” referring to the trend of bringing work home. Many doctors find themselves spending substantial time at home, sometimes in their pajamas, completing notes on their earlier patient interactions.

Kortsch views Nabla as a solution to alleviate doctors' workloads. “It has features that enable our providers to engage more with their patients and spend less time typing, which is the core objective, ” Kortsch stated. “Our providers genuinely enjoy interacting with patients; they chose this career to assist and converse with them. Reducing their typing duties in favor of patient engagement has been invigorating. ” Patients at Denver Health can choose to opt out of the AI software if they prefer, but Kortsch noted that most see its advantages. “They exhibited better eye contact and demonstrated greater emotional availability since they weren't preoccupied with typing, ” Kortsch said. “That’s the thrilling part. Both our patients and providers reap the rewards. ” For Lebrun, it has been fulfilling to develop technology with tangible, positive effects. Nabla’s specialized focus has significantly simplified the recruitment of top-tier AI engineers. “This is my fourth startup, but it's the first time I've experienced such a direct impact, and we receive numerous positive responses from physicians daily, ” Lebrun shared. “This makes it easier for us to cultivate a motivated and loyal team, especially compared to ventures involving ad sales or using AI for social media engagement. It’s a wonderful experience. ”
