Google's AI Agent 'Jarvis' Accidentally Leaked as Chrome Extension

Google inadvertently leaked its AI agent designed for internet browsing. According to The Information, an "internal preview" of the AI agent, internally named Jarvis, was briefly available for download as a Chrome web extension on Tuesday. The extension was described as "a helpful companion that surfs the web with you" but was nonfunctional due to access issues. It was removed from the web store later that day. The AI agent is anticipated to assist users by browsing the web, purchasing products, and booking flights. Google intends to launch Jarvis publicly in December along with the newest version of its Gemini large language model. Google isn't alone in developing AI agents. Anthropic recently unveiled a feature for its Claude LLM that can manage your computer to read and write JavaScript code. OpenAI is also reportedly working on AI agents. In a recent Reddit AMA, OpenAI's CPO, Kevin Weil, hinted that ChatGPT will soon be able to initiate messages with users and that performing tasks for users will be a focal point in 2025.

Brief news summary

Google unintentionally leaked its AI browsing agent, known internally as Jarvis, on the Chrome web store as an extension. Although briefly available for download, it wasn't functional due to permission issues and was quickly removed. This incident aligns with previous rumors about Google's work on an AI agent designed to browse the internet, assist users in tasks like shopping and booking flights, and is expected to launch in December. The release is likely to coincide with the latest version of Google's Gemini large language model. The AI landscape has other players, too; for instance, Anthropic recently introduced a feature for its Claude language model that can automate computer tasks, while OpenAI is also developing AI agents. OpenAI's CPO, Kevin Weil, hinted that by 2025, ChatGPT might proactively message users and perform various tasks on their behalf. This suggests a competitive race among major tech companies to develop advanced AI agents capable of handling increasingly complex user interactions.
