The Ethereum Foundation (EF), the nonprofit entity backing Ethereum's ecosystem, has announced the formation of an external advisory group aimed at upholding the fundamental values of the blockchain network. On February 28, the foundation unveiled the “Silviculture Society, ” which consists of a diverse group of individuals from outside the EF. This advisory group is intended to offer informal guidance to the EF and actively engage with the diverse “forests” within the expansive Ethereum landscape. The nonprofit emphasized that the group’s mission is to help maintain Ethereum’s foundational principles: open source development, privacy, security, and resistance to censorship. The EF stated that the network's prosperity relies on dedicated developers who align their work with these core values. The EF has appointed 15 individuals to the council, comprising a mix of researchers, developers, and project founders. Vitalik Buterin Critiques the Crypto Industry's Ethical Shift The establishment of the external advisory group comes in the wake of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's recent concerns regarding the industry's moral drift towards gambling tendencies. On February 20, when asked about his frustrations with the previous year in the crypto space, Buterin indicated that he was disappointed by the criticism directed at Ethereum for not supporting blockchain-based gambling platforms. He expressed that Ethereum was unfairly labeled as “bad and intolerant” for its reluctance to accommodate casinos, while other blockchains were viewed more favorably for doing so.

Buterin stated that should the community abandon its values, he would not wish to remain in the industry. Nonetheless, he noted that discussions with community members in private settings reflected a commitment to maintaining core values, which reassured him about the integrity of the space. On February 26, the EF announced the contribution, asserting that privacy should be seen as standard and that coding is not a criminal act. Pertsev expressed gratitude towards the foundation for their substantial support, mentioning that it means a lot to him as he prepares for his appeal.
