Google is introducing an experimental feature that enables Search Console users to configure the Search Results Performance report using natural language instead of manually selecting filters. Named AI-powered configuration, this feature converts plain-language requests into corresponding filters and settings. You simply describe the analysis you want, and the system takes care of the technical setup. What’s New The AI-powered configuration supports three report setup types: 1. Filters You can refine data by query, page, country, device, search appearance, or date range using natural language. For instance, a request like “Show me queries on phone searches that contain the word ‘sports’ in the last 6 months” automatically applies the relevant filters. 2. Comparisons Complex date range comparisons that previously needed manual setup can now be created through prompts such as “Compare traffic for my pages that contain ‘/blog’ in this quarter to the same quarter last year. ” 3.
Metric Selection The feature can show specific combinations of the four available metrics—Clicks, Impressions, Average CTR, and Average Position—based on your instructions. For example, “Show me the Average CTR and Average Position of my queries in Spain in the last 28 days. ” Limitations Google noted several restrictions. This feature works only with Performance reports for Search results and does not support Discover or News reports. AI-powered configuration is intended solely for setting up filters, comparisons, and metrics, and cannot sort tables or export data. Google also warned that the AI may misinterpret requests. It’s important to review suggested filters before analyzing data to ensure they match your intended query. Why This Matters This functionality could significantly reduce the manual effort involved in creating complex filter combinations in Search Console. Being able to request custom date comparisons or multi-filter setups via natural language streamlines multiple steps in the reporting process. However, the caution about accuracy is important, especially for critical reporting. You should verify that the AI correctly understood your request before relying on the data for decisions or client reports. Looking Ahead Google is initially rolling out AI-powered configuration to a limited number of websites, with plans to expand access gradually. No specific timeline for broader availability has been announced. Users can provide feedback through buttons in Search Console or by posting in the Google Search Central Community.
