Google unveiled a $30 million global initiative inviting nonprofits, civic groups, academic institutions, and social enterprises to join the Google. org Accelerator: Generative AI program. This six-month program aims to fund projects focused on developing generative AI solutions for social impact. Participants devoted to creating these AI-driven solutions will receive financial support. Google is seeking proposals that leverage generative AI to address issues in its three main focus areas. The first focus is on knowledge, skills, and learning, aiming to create pathways for people to gain essential knowledge and skills. Secondly, scientific advancement is prioritized to promote breakthroughs and AI-based innovation, fostering collaborations between academic and research institutions and organizations like nonprofits. Lastly, the program seeks to encourage resilient communities that work toward building stronger societies, a safer internet, and crisis resilience. The accelerator offers social-impact organizations funding, mentorship, Google Cloud Credits, technical training, and pro bono support to develop tools that harness generative AI for societal benefit.
Applications will be evaluated based on criteria like feasibility, the impactful use of generative AI, scalability, and program participation. THE LARGER TREND The Google. org Accelerator: Generative AI initiative launched in March, starting with $20 million in grants supporting 21 nonprofits. Initial projects included Quill, which develops AI tools for student writing feedback, and the World Bank's generative AI app for accessible development research. In 2023, Google funded 15 AI-driven projects, including digital health initiatives to enhance provider experiences and patient care access, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each project received $3 million in technical support, cash, and Google Cloud credits. Some projects were awarded Google Fellowships, allowing Google employees to assist organizations pro bono for up to six months.
