Google plans to enhance its smart assistant, utilizing advancements in generative artificial intelligence. The Assistant unit is undergoing a major reorganization, which includes a limited number of layoffs. Peeyush Ranjan, Google's VP of Engineering at Assistant, stated in an email to employees that the focus will be on integrating large language model (LLM) technology into Assistant, similar to Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. Ranjan highlighted the potential of generative AI to revolutionize users' lives and expressed excitement about the possibilities of a supercharged Assistant powered by LLM technology. The Assistant team has already commenced work on this endeavor. Affected employees will have a 60-day window to find other positions within Google. The Speech team within the reorganization has also undergone changes, with Francoise Beaufays moving to work under Sissie Hsiao.
These modifications are aimed at enabling the division to operate with agility and concentration. Google is enthusiastic about exploring how LLMs can enhance Assistant and improve user experiences. The rapid progress in generative AI has led Google to embed the technology across a range of products. Assistant is utilized in mobile and home devices, as well as in wearables, smart displays, TVs, and vehicles. Google faces competition from products such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing, as they provide alternative search methods. In response, Google has been updating Bard, incorporating it into various languages and expanding its features.
