Google is expanding the capabilities of its Maps service beyond navigation, aiming to provide users with more than just directions. In addition to helping users find their way, Google plans to offer related content and future vacation ideas through Maps. To achieve this, the search giant has partnered with media outlets such as the New York Times, Lonely Planet, and The Infatuation. These partnerships will bring curated lists of restaurants and attractions to specific travel destinations, starting with 40 cities in the US and Canada. Google is also utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) in Maps for the first time, which is currently in the pilot phase with selected power users. At a recent travel-themed event in Manhattan, Google showcased these updates. The company has been leveraging AI, including generative AI, to enhance various aspects of Maps, including information on electric vehicle charging stations and improved recommendations. In addition to lists from publisher partners, Google Maps will generate lists of "trending" restaurants that are popular at a particular time, as well as "hidden gems" that are steadily gaining interest.

Andrew Duchi, Director of Product at Google Maps, explained that they are working with smaller entities, such as travel bloggers, to surface relevant recommendation lists. Duchi emphasized that they have specific partnerships with large publishers but are not paying creators to generate content. Instead, they aim to engage with creators and make the tool useful for them. Google plans to gradually roll out its Maps generative AI features, making the technology more pervasive across its offerings. The integration of generative AI in Maps will make it more conversational, allowing users to ask specific questions and refine their search based on dialogue. For now, this feature is limited to top Local Guide volunteers, and there is no set timeline for its availability to all Maps users.
