Google's John Mueller on Recovering Low-Quality AI Content Sites and Domain Strategy

Brief news summary

John Mueller from Google addressed concerns about a website affected by low-quality AI-generated content that was not being indexed. He clarified that manually rewriting AI content does not guarantee improved rankings or authenticity. Instead, Mueller advised focusing on the site's overall value by reconsidering its purpose and creating a strong content strategy. He recommended treating the project as a fresh start, potentially rebuilding the site entirely with original, high-quality content rather than just modifying existing pages. Although this may take more time than launching a new domain, retaining the current domain has advantages. Regarding changes in language, Mueller noted that Google can index and trust the site as long as the content remains consistent and of high quality. He emphasized prioritizing genuine quality, clear intent, and meaningful value over simply reworking AI-generated material.

John Mueller of Google stated that simply having a human rewrite AI-generated content will not automatically improve a site's ranking on Google. Instead, he emphasized the need to reconsider the entire content strategy and the overall purpose of the website. This topic arose on Reddit, where a user asked: Can a site with low-quality AI content recover and get indexed if I manually rewrite everything and switch the language? The user explained that they had previously started a small niche site as an experiment to test how AI-generated content performs in SEO. The site contained mostly low-quality AI-written content in English, and it is currently not being indexed (crawled but not indexed). Despite this, the user values the domain and the time invested in design and UX, so they prefer not to discard it. They are considering starting fresh and asked: 1) Can this domain recover and become fully indexed if it is rebuilt with high-quality, original (non-AI) content, despite its history of low-quality AI content? 2) Does changing the site's main language from English to Portuguese cause any additional problems with indexing or trust, or will Google accept this as long as the content is good and consistent? 3) Would it be better to keep the same domain and clean up the content or start fresh with a new domain to avoid any negative association with its past? John Mueller responded that the solution isn’t straightforward.

He said, "Just rewriting AI content by a human won't change that, it won't make it authentic. " His key advice was to focus not on whether the content is AI-generated, but on the value the site provides to the web. Simply rewriting AI content manually does not inherently make it authentic or valuable. So, what is the best approach?Mueller recommended essentially starting over by rethinking the site’s purpose and how it will add value. Beginning with a “bad state” can be more challenging than starting fresh with a new domain. He stated: If you want to change all your site's content, treat it as starting over with no content, and reflect on what your goal is for the site rather than merely editing existing pages manually. Starting from a poor state will be more difficult and potentially take much longer than using a new domain, although sometimes keeping the existing domain is still worthwhile. Mueller also noted that Google's stance on domain history impacting rankings is well-known and still relevant, especially for sites with low-quality content. A screenshot of his response accompanied this explanation.
