Google is reportedly planning to introduce a new "AI Mode" to its search engine, as noted by The Information. This feature would allow users to switch to AI Mode via an option at the top of the results page, providing an interface similar to the Gemini AI chatbot. According to reports, the AI Mode tab will be located on the left side of the "All, " "Images, " "Videos, " and "Shopping" tabs. When using AI Mode, Google will present links to related webpages along with a search bar beneath the conversational answers that encourages users to "Ask a follow-up. . . " This aligns with Android Authority's report from earlier this month, which identified an AI Mode in a Google app beta.
Additionally, 9to5Google discovered code indicating that users can ask questions using their voice in AI Mode. While The Verge sought comment from Google, they have not yet received a response. With OpenAI making search available in ChatGPT for all users, Google faces pressure to integrate search and AI. The company already offers AI-generated search summaries for certain queries and recently expanded this feature to many more countries in October.
