Google Docs Introduces Gemini-Powered AI Image Generator

Google Workspace is introducing a Gemini-powered AI image generator directly into Google Docs, allowing users to quickly create visuals for their documents. This tool functions much like a clip art maker, similar to Microsoft’s AI art feature in its Office suite. The image generator in Docs is accessible to those with paid Workspace accounts that have the Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium add-ons. Users with this feature can access it by navigating to Insert > Image > Help me create an image, which opens a “Create an image” sidebar. Here, users can enter a description of the desired image and select an art style, such as “Photography” or “Sketch, ” from a drop-down menu. To fit the images into the layout of documents like fliers, brochures, or menus, users can choose from square, horizontal, or vertical aspect ratios.
Additionally, it’s possible to create full-bleed cover images that span the width of a pageless document. The "Create an image" feature utilizes the latest Imagen 3 generator from Google, which claims to offer “better detail, richer lighting, and fewer distracting artifacts” compared to its previous models. Last year, Google Slides integrated a presentation slide generator powered by Google’s Duet AI tools. The feature will initially be available to rapid release schedule domains starting today and may take up to 15 days to appear. For domains on a scheduled release, the gradual rollout will begin on December 16th.
