Google's 'Ask for Me' AI Tool: Making Phone Calls Easier for Users

Do you dislike making phone calls?Google has a solution for you. The company is trialing a new tool that enables artificial intelligence to call businesses and inquire on your behalf. The feature, named “Ask for Me, ” is designed to gather information on various aspects like pricing and service availability. At present, it is exclusively available for nail salons and auto repair shops, according to Google product lead Rose Yao in a post on X. When you opt into the experiment through Google Search Labs, searching for nail salons or auto shops may prompt you with an “Ask for Me” option. You can then select this option and respond to a series of questions including the type of car you own, the service you need, and your preferred appointment time.

Additionally, you will need to provide your email and phone number for updates related to your request. Google spokesperson Craig Ewer informed The Verge that each call made with “Ask for Me” starts with an announcement indicating that it’s an automated call from Google on behalf of a user. Ewer also noted that there are limits on the number of calls to prevent businesses from being inundated with automated calls from Google. He mentioned that any information gathered during these calls could assist in fulfilling similar requests from other users. Businesses wishing to avoid these automated calls can opt out through their Google Business Profile settings or by notifying Google during a call reception. Users who activate this feature may find themselves on a waitlist, as capacity is limited for the duration of the experiment, Yao explained. She further mentioned that “Ask for Me” utilizes the same Duplex technology that powers AI-driven restaurant reservations through Search or Maps and assists businesses in keeping information like operating hours up to date on Maps.
