Google has introduced a new customization feature for its AI podcasts within the NotebookLM software, which I had the opportunity to test early. I used Franz Kafka’s *The Metamorphosis* as my source material, spending several hours generating diverse podcasts related to this iconic novella. Launched in 2023 as an experimental AI writing tool by Google Labs, NotebookLM has gained renewed interest since September when it introduced options for creating podcast-like conversations between two AI voices, one male and one female, based on uploaded documents. While these AI-generated audio deep dives are useful for study and productivity, many viral online clips showcase the entertainment value of having the AI discuss outrageous or personal documents, such as LinkedIn profiles. Raiza Martin, head of the NotebookLM team, expressed excitement about enhancing user control over content, as customization has been a top user request. She indicated that this update is just the beginning of further improvements. As NotebookLM approaches its first anniversary, it is shedding the “experimental” label, suggesting it won’t join the ranks of abandoned Google projects anytime soon. Martin noted the removal was due to meeting internal benchmarks for quality, user engagement, and interface standards, assuring users of increased software stability. ### Customizing AI Podcasts To create a podcast in NotebookLM, users can start by opening Google Labs and initiating a New Notebook. By adding source documents—ranging from local files to YouTube links—users can then customize the output.
After selecting the Notebook guide, users will see options for generating deep dives and customizing them. Suggested customization features include emphasizing specific sections, exploring broader themes, or targeting different audiences. One recommendation from Martin is to first generate a basic Audio Overview without adjustments, jotting down any questions or topics for expansion before using these notes to create tailored prompts for a personalized podcast. ### Initial Impressions I experimented with an 80-page file of Kafka’s existential work, where the protagonist transforms into a gigantic bug. The initial Audio Overview provided a broad summary and thematic discussion, which was decent but not particularly groundbreaking. After adjusting my prompt to focus on themes like alienation and bureaucracy, the customized output effectively honed in on these motifs, reminiscent of classroom discussions. However, when I directed the AI to concentrate on specific pages from the source material, the outcome felt similar to the initial podcast, suggesting that a larger document might yield more satisfying results with focused prompts. One of the more fascinating aspects was tailoring the podcast for different audiences. When tasked with explaining the novella to a recent college graduate, the hosts thoughtfully addressed the challenges of adapting to life changes. In a humorous twist, the AI even attempted to discuss Kafka’s work for a group of drag queens, highlighting themes of isolation and family tensions with lively banter, albeit some slang felt a bit awkward. In summary, while NotebookLM's AI podcasts may not always capture every nuance of larger documents, the ability to create personalized content feels transformative—thankfully without the nightmare of turning into a giant insect.
