With a net worth estimated at $144 billion and a small percentage of Google shares, Brin aims to instill a greater sense of urgency among employees. He urged those working on AI to accelerate their efforts to compete with companies like OpenAI and Microsoft. In a memo directed at engineers developing Gemini—the name for Google's AI models and applications—Brin noted, “Competition has accelerated immensely and the final race to AGI is underway. I believe we have all the elements necessary to win this race, but we must amplify our efforts. ” He added that a work schedule of “60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity. ” Brin suggested that engineers should leverage Google’s own AI models to assist in coding, asserting that this approach will make them “the most efficient coders and AI scientists in the world. ” The irony of Brin’s message is palpable. Generative AI, which learns from vast amounts of written content on the web to generate new text, including code, raises questions about its implications for human engineers. Major companies such as Salesforce and Klarna have touted AI's potential to replace engineers as the technology continues to evolve.

For instance, Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, announced during a recent earnings call that the company has no plans to hire engineers this year, thanks to the effectiveness of the AI agents they have implemented. However, it is crucial to approach these assertions skeptically, as leaders have incentives to minimize hiring costs while capitalizing on investor enthusiasm about AI. While code-writing bots can enhance efficiency through automating repetitive tasks, critics argue that engineers must grasp the underlying code to address issues or implement improvements. Notably, Anthropic requires applicants to certify that they will not use AI in their job application processes. Additionally, AI systems often struggle with expansive codebases due to their limited memory capacity. Concerns remain that some companies may opt to substitute humans with AI, even if the technology is less effective, since human labor is frequently the largest expense in organizations. AI advocates contend that the technology will create more opportunities for engineers, as it allows companies to develop additional products that they previously lacked the time or resources to pursue. Still, Brin's appeal can easily be likened to a manager requesting a senior employee to mentor a younger, less costly replacement.
