Senate Republican conference chairman John Barrasso is urging President Biden's Energy Department to cease its collaborations with Chinese state-linked individuals in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Barrasso expressed concerns regarding potential access to vital AI foundation models by individuals sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He referenced a report by the National Science Foundation that highlighted the risks associated with research collaborations with Chinese organizations, citing Beijing's inclination to direct fundamental research towards military purposes and restrict information flow.
Barrasso also criticized the lack of oversight and funding for high-risk areas such as intellectual property theft in the Energy Department's AI program. The senator has called for clarification from Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm regarding the strategy to address these challenges and security risks by April 8.
