Biden Administration Releases AI Guidelines for Critical Infrastructure

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Thursday, the Biden administration released new guidelines for utilizing artificial intelligence across critical infrastructure such as the power grid, water systems, and the air travel network. The guidelines, crafted by the Homeland Security Department in collaboration with its advisory Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board, are intended for adoption by private industry. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas mentioned that the framework is meant to be dynamic, evolving alongside industry developments. The framework advises AI developers to assess potential risks in their products, ensure that their technologies follow "human-centric values, " and safeguard user privacy. Additionally, cloud-computing infrastructure is urged to vet both hardware and software suppliers while securing data centers physically. Critical infrastructure owners and operators are encouraged to enhance cybersecurity measures, considering AI-related risks, and to be transparent about AI usage.

The guidelines also extend to state and local governments. When asked if the framework might change after President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, Mayorkas emphasized that he was enacting policies under President Joe Biden's administration. "The president-elect will decide which policies to implement, " said Mayorkas, noting that this choice remains the prerogative of the president-elect.
