He acknowledged that, like any new technology, integrating AI carries both advantages and risks, and emphasized the need to manage them effectively. Steil's goal is to demonstrate, in a transparent manner, how AI can benefit not only Congress but also other legislative branch entities such as the Library of Congress and the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The upcoming hearing, titled "Artificial Intelligence (AI): Innovations within the Legislative Branch, " will explore the impact of AI on Congress, the Library of Congress, and the GAO. Steil's committee, led by Representative Stephanie Bice, has been producing monthly reports on AI integration strategy since September.

Their most recent report, released in December, highlights various current use cases of AI in the House of Representatives, including AI-assisted chatbots, automations, and support for the Helpdesk. The report also mentions the use of AI in drafting constituent correspondence, emails, memos, and briefing notes, as well as for internal research and grammatical corrections in initial versions of bills and speeches. Steil noted the potential for AI to streamline the GAO's auditing process and enhance lawmakers' effectiveness in constituent services. He emphasized the significant opportunities AI presents for auditing taxpayer spending and improving efficiency in that area. Additionally, AI can help members of Congress better respond to their constituents' needs, including handling constituent requests and facilitating communication with federal agencies. Steil's broader aim for the hearing is to explore how AI can be leveraged to make the government, and specifically Congress, more efficient. The House Administration Committee's hearing on AI is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a. m.
