From English Literature to AI: A Journey into Data Science and Tech

Brief news summary

Initially drawn to English for analyzing works and poetry, I ended up in the tech industry, specializing in data science and AI. Realizing medicine wasn't for me during college, I explored alternative paths and found connections between data science and literature. Self-studying through online platforms, I learned coding, AI, and machine learning. Consulting a hiring manager at Tesla, I studied MIT OpenCourseWare and reached out to hiring managers, securing jobs at an AI startup and my current position. Though hesitant about switching to tech, my father assured me that formal education wasn't always necessary. Studying English taught me the value of considering multiple perspectives, a skill beneficial in STEM fields. For those transitioning, identifying skills from humanities majors and applying them creatively is vital, impressing employers and making you more marketable.

I was drawn to English due to my fascination with the analytical aspect of critiquing literature and analyzing poetry. I found these aspects to be extremely intriguing. Currently, I am employed at a company that utilizes AI for predictive analytics in the insurance industry. My role involves training processors to extract data, which is then transformed into templates and databases. Additionally, I engage in prompt engineering, where I gain insights from extensive medical records or attorney statements. This is how I transitioned from studying English to working in the field of technology. Change in direction During my third year of college, I realized that pursuing another ten years of education for medical school was not what I desired. Consequently, I began researching alternative paths. It was during this exploration that I discovered the significance of data science, machine learning, and AI. The field of data science felt akin to my experience with English literature, as it involved making connections between various data points and assessing their correlations and impacts. I embarked on self-study in data science through platforms like Coursera and Udemy, where I completed numerous online courses. This allowed me to learn coding and gain a comprehensive understanding of AI and machine learning. Moreover, with the introduction of ChatGPT, I had the opportunity to experiment with it extensively, further developing my skills in prompt engineering. Seeking guidance, I had a conversation with a senior AI position hiring manager at Tesla.

She recommended starting with MIT OpenCourseWare, which I followed by watching an array of their videos, completing their homework assignments, and taking practice quizzes. My journey to my current role I applied to various job opportunities and actively reached out to hiring managers and directors. Ultimately, I secured my first job at an AI startup after conversing with the CEO, who offered me a position following the interview. Similarly, I obtained my current role in the same manner. Reaching out to the CEO of the startup, we conducted a brief interview, which then turned into an internship opportunity, eventually leading to full-time employment. Apprehensions and reflections on transitioning into tech Initially, I had reservations about transitioning into the tech industry and worried that I might have to spend a significant amount of time learning before securing a job. However, having had my father's guidance, who himself works in tech, I learned that one does not necessarily require extensive formal education to grasp the fundamentals and enter the field. No regrets about majoring in English I have no regrets about choosing to major in English literature. However, I did experience moments of doubt along the way. One of the greatest values I find in studying English literature is the ability to consider multiple perspectives. This skill has proven beneficial in AI and data science, as it encourages me to explore different angles. I have noticed that this approach is not as prevalent in STEM environments, where often there is a singular correct answer. For those considering a similar transition, I believe it is crucial to understand what aspects of your humanities major you genuinely appreciate and then identify how those skills can be applied outside of the field. This demonstrates creativity to employers, showcasing the ability to apply knowledge from one domain to another, which enhances your value in the job market.
