During Intel's Q2 2023 earnings call, CEO Pat Gelsinger expressed a strong belief in the potential of AI, stating that Intel plans to incorporate AI into every product they develop. In the near future, Intel will release Meteor Lake, their first consumer chip with a built-in neural processor for machine learning tasks. While Intel initially indicated that only their premium Ultra chips might include AI coprocessors, Gelsinger now envisions AI being integrated into all Intel products. Gelsinger often emphasizes the "four superpowers" or "five superpowers" of technology companies, originally including AI and cloud. However, he now suggests that AI and cloud are not necessarily intertwined. While some people are exploring the cloud for activities like using ChatGPT to write research papers or simplifying homework assignments, Gelsinger acknowledges that not every task can be effectively performed in the cloud. Certain AI capabilities, such as real-time language translation in zoom calls, transcription, automation inferencing, content generation, and gaming environments, as well as productivity tools like local legal brief generation, will require AI enablement at the client level.
Gelsinger believes that AI will be integrated into a wide range of devices, including hearing aids. He highlights that AI implementation will occur both at the edge and on client platforms. Gelsinger also acknowledges that while Nvidia dominates the AI cloud market, Intel is seeking to carve out its own path. He notes that not everyone prefers to rely solely on the cloud, citing Microsoft as an example of a company that still generates substantial revenue from selling Windows PC licenses. However, Microsoft is also embracing AI, as demonstrated by their AI-powered Copilot tool, which is set to transform Office documents and is integrated into Windows itself. It's worth paying attention to the next version of Windows, as there are indications that Intel's Meteor Lake chip, with its built-in neural engine, will be closely aligned with Windows 12.
